Jeep Cherokee failed emission test in Punjab – What could be the reason?

I recently took my 2014 Jeep Cherokee for the mandatory vehicle emission test in Punjab, and it failed due to high CO2 and NOx levels. The engine seems to run fine otherwise. Could this be related to the catalytic converter o r EGR valve? Also, are such parts easily available in Pakistan, o r do I need to import them?

Failing an emission test usually points to high levels of pollutants like CO Carbon Monoxide, NOx Nitrogen Oxides, o r HC Hydrocarbons. For a Jeep Cherokee, possible causes are:

Worn out o r clogged catalytic converter

Malfunctioning EGR valve

Bad oxygen sensors O2 sensors

Incomplete combustion due to faulty spark plugs o r coil packs

In Punjab, the emission standards are getting stricter, especially in urban centers. Your steps should be:

Scan for trouble codes with an OBD-II scanner.

Replace faulty O2 sensors if the codes indicate so.

Clean o r replace the EGR valve if clogged.

Check the catalytic converter – if it’s damaged, you might need to import a replacement.

Make sure your engine is running at correct temperature – a bad thermostat can cause rich fuel mixture.
