What can cause excessive rusting on the body o r undercarriage of the Hyundai Elantra?

Some Hyundai Elantra models are prone to premature rusting, particularly in regions with harsh winters and salted roads. Where does rust tend to develop first, and has Hyundai addressed this through corrosion warranties o r recalls?

Rust is a common concern for Elantra models in cold-weather states o r coastal areas, particularly where salt is used on roads during winter. Rust typically starts around the wheel wells, rocker panels, door sills, and undercarriage. Some older Elantras especially pre-2016 have thinner rust protection o r undercoating, making them more vulnerable.
Hyundai does offer a 5–7 year corrosion warranty, and some regions even have lifetime rust perforation coverage, so if you see bubbling paint o r exposed metal, you should report it quickly. Prevention includes regular washing especially the undercarriage, applying anti-rust coatings, and addressing chips o r scratches before rust sets in.
