What causes steering noise o r stiffness in Hyundai Elantra after 50,000 km in Pakistan?

My 2020 Elantra started making a slight groaning noise when I turn the wheel, especially in the morning. Its driven about 55,000 km in Karachi. Could this be due to worn steering components o r lack of lubrication? Is this common in our climate?

After 50,000 km, especially in Pakistan’s hot and dusty climate, you may experience groaning noises o r stiffness in the steering due to:

Dry o r worn steering rack bushings

Steering coupler wear a common Elantra issue

Lack of lubrication o r dust build-up in joints

Failing EPS motor

In coastal cities like Karachi, humidity and salt in the air can also cause rust in the steering shaft o r coupler components.

What to do:

Have the steering rack and column inspected for wear

Replace the steering coupler if there’s noise/play

Apply high-quality grease to joints if accessible

Scan the EPS system for faults if the wheel is stiff

Timely maintenance can prevent a full rack replacement, which can cost over PKR 50,000–70,000 if ignored.
