What causes the crankshaft position sensor to fail on a Hyundai Elantra?

My 2015 Elantra stalled while driving and now struggles to start. The mechanic said it might be the crankshaft position sensor. What causes this sensor to fail, and what are the symptoms I should look for?

The crankshaft position sensor monitors the rotation of the crankshaft to control ignition timing and fuel injection.

Causes of failure:

Heat and engine vibration

Oil contamination

Electrical shorts o r worn wiring

Symptoms of a failing crank sensor:

Engine stalling

Hard o r no start

Misfiring

Check engine light with codes like P0335

This is a critical sensor, and failure can cause the car to stall o r not start at all. Replacement is generally affordable $150–$300 and urgent if failure occurs.
