What problems can a stuck open o r closed purge valve cause in my Hyundai Elantra?

My Hyundai Elantra 2020 model has recently been showing signs like poor fuel economy, delayed engine start, and a rough idle. Could a stuck purge valve be responsible? What exactly happens when the purge valve is malfunctioning?

When the purge valve is:

Stuck open:

Causes vacuum leaks, rough idle, misfires

Fuel smell under the hood

Can damage spark plugs over time

Stuck closed:

Prevents fuel vapors from being reused

Leads to fuel tank pressure build-up

May trigger check engine light and fail emissions checks

In Pakistan, where dust, bad fuel, and extreme heat are common, this valve can malfunction earlier than the typical 100,000 km lifespan.

Symptoms include:

Poor acceleration

Bad fuel economy

Delayed engine starts

Fuel odor near engine o r fuel tank

Diagnosis: Use an OBD-II scanner o r have a mechanic test valve operation with a vacuum pump.
