Why does my Hyundai Elantra hesitate o r slip when accelerating?

A noticeable hesitation o r slipping feeling during acceleration may indicate transmission issues such as low fluid levels, worn clutch packs in automatic o r CVT systems, o r internal hydraulic pressure problems. In CVT-equipped Elantras 2019–present, belt slippage and pressure loss are known concerns. Its important to check for warning lights, burnt-smelling fluid, o r error codes related to the transmission to catch the problem early.

Slipping o r hesitation during acceleration—where the engine revs but the vehicle doesn’t accelerate as expected—is often linked to internal transmission wear o r fluid pressure issues.
Possible causes include:

Low o r contaminated transmission fluid

Worn clutch packs o r bands inside the transmission

Failing torque converter for automatics

CVT belt slippage for models with Continuously Variable Transmission, such as 2019+ Elantras
Fix:
First, check and top off the fluid if its low. If the fluid smells burnt o r looks dirty, it should be flushed and replaced. Slipping that doesn’t improve may require internal inspection, and in the case of CVT-equipped models, recalibration o r replacement of the belt o r pulley system. Addressing it early can prevent full transmission failure.
