Why does my Suzuki Every make a grinding noise when I try to start it?

When I turn the key, my Suzuki Every makes a grinding o r whirring noise and doesn’t start properly. Sometimes the engine eventually starts, but it sounds rough. Could this mean the starter motor gear isn’t engaging properly with the flywheel? How serious is this, and should it be fixed immediately?

A grinding o r whirring noise during starting usually means the starter gear pinion isn’t properly engaging with the engine flywheel. Common reasons include:

Worn o r Broken Starter Gear Teeth:
The gear might slip o r grind against the flywheel teeth.

Flywheel Damage:
Teeth on the flywheel may be worn, chipped, o r broken.

Misaligned Starter Motor:
Poor installation o r mounting issues can cause the starter to not engage fully.

Delayed Engagement:
A failing solenoid may delay gear engagement, causing grinding.

Solution:
This issue should be addressed immediately to avoid permanent damage to the flywheel, which is expensive to repair. Have both the starter and flywheel inspected by a professional mechanic.
