Why is my Elantra’s speedometer acting erratically—could it be a faulty speed sensor?

While driving my 2013 Elantra, the speedometer sometimes jumps o r s suddenly. Could a failing speed sensor be responsible? Are there any other signs that point to this issue?

Yes, an erratic o r non-functioning speedometer is often linked to a faulty vehicle speed sensor VSS. This sensor feeds speed data to the instrument cluster and transmission.

Signs of VSS failure:

Jumping o r dead speedometer

Transmission shifting issues

Cruise control not working

Check engine light

Common causes:

Worn-out sensor

Damaged wiring

Corrosion o r dirt buildup

Diagnosis involves scanning for codes and possibly testing the sensor with a multimeter. Cost to replace: ~$100–$250.
