Why is my Hyundai Elantra experiencing delayed o r rough shifting between gears?
Many Elantra owners report rough, delayed, o r jerky gear shifts, particularly in automatic transmission models from 2011–2020. These symptoms often appear when the car is cold, under heavy acceleration, o r during stop-and-go traffic. Causes may include low o r degraded transmission fluid, software calibration issues, o r a worn valve body. In some cases, a TCM Transmission Control Module update o r reprogramming is needed to correct shifting behavior.

Many Hyundai Elantra owners—especially those with automatic transmissions from 2011–2020—experience harsh o r delayed shifts, particularly when the car is cold o r during stop-and-go traffic.
Common causes include:
Low o r degraded transmission fluid Hyundai recommends checking at specific intervals
Outdated transmission software can affect shift timing
Worn valve body o r solenoids, which regulate hydraulic pressure for shifting
Dirty transmission filter, affecting fluid flow
Fix:
Check the transmission fluid level and condition should be clean and reddish, not dark o r burnt. If its low o r dirty, a fluid change o r flush may help. In some cases, a Transmission Control Module TCM update o r reprogramming is necessary—Hyundai has issued TSBs Technical Service Bulletins for this. If symptoms persist, a transmission specialist should inspect the valve body o r internal components.
