Why is my Hyundai Elantra showing a “Check Engine” light related to the oxygen sensor?

I drive a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, and the check engine light came on. A code reader says its the oxygen sensor O2 sensor. What does this mean, and how serious is it? Can I still drive the car safely?

When your Elantra’s check engine light shows a code like P0130–P0161, it usually points to a faulty oxygen sensor O2 sensor. This sensor monitors the level of oxygen in the exhaust to help adjust fuel mixture for optimal efficiency.

Common causes:

Old o r worn-out sensor typical after 60,000–100,000 miles

Exhaust leaks

Faulty wiring o r connectors

Symptoms:

Decreased fuel economy

Rough idling o r hesitation

Strong exhaust smell

Driving is usually safe in the short term, but leaving it unaddressed can damage the catalytic converter and hurt fuel efficiency. Replacing the sensor typically costs $100–$250 including labor.
