Nissan Leaf Overview

The Nissan Leaf, first introduced in 2010, became one of the world’s first mass-market electric vehicles (EVs). The second-generation model (2017–2025) further refined its technology, design, and range. Available in two main variants — the Leaf EV and the Leaf e+ (Plus) — the car caters to both everyday urban users and those looking for extended range. While the standard Leaf EV offers a practical 40 kWh battery pack, the Leaf e+ variant steps up with a larger 62 kWh battery, improved performance, and longer driving range.

Exterior
The Leaf’s exterior received a complete makeover in its second generation, showcasing a more aerodynamic and modern hatchback design. The sharp V-Motion grille, LED headlights, floating roof design, and distinctive boomerang-shaped tail lights give the car a tech-savvy, futuristic appearance. The e+ variant adds subtle badging and larger alloy wheels for a slightly more upscale and sportier look.

Interior
Inside, the Nissan Leaf provides a comfortable cabin with a clean, functional layout. The materials and design are practical, though not overly premium, with soft-touch surfaces in key areas. The digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and e-Pedal technology provide modern convenience. While the interior is well-built, it has remained relatively unchanged over the years, and may feel slightly dated compared to newer EVs.

Safety
Nissan equips the Leaf with a strong suite of safety features, including standard Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The standout feature is ProPilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system that combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist, making highway journeys smoother and safer. The Leaf has earned high safety ratings in various global crash tests, reflecting its solid structural integrity and safety tech.

Mileage & Charging
The standard Leaf EV with its 40 kWh battery delivers a range of around 240–270 km, while the Leaf e+ with its 62 kWh battery offers an extended range of approximately 350–385 km, depending on driving conditions. Charging times are modest, with standard AC charging taking 7–9 hours, while DC fast charging (50 kW) can recharge the battery up to 80% in around 45 minutes. However, the Leaf’s charging speed is slower compared to many newer EVs with 100+ kW charging support.

Competitors
In the compact EV segment, the Nissan Leaf competes with models like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, MG ZS EV, and Chevrolet Bolt EV. While some rivals offer more modern interiors, faster charging, or slightly better range, the Leaf remains a popular choice due to its affordability, proven reliability, and strong aftersales support.
