Subaru Pleo 1st Generation Overview

Launched in 1998, the first-generation Subaru Pleo replaced the Subaru Vivio, aligning with updated Japanese kei car regulations. This compact car featured a front-engine layout and was available with either front-wheel drive or optional four-wheel drive. Offered in three trims—A, F, and L—it came in both 3-door and 5-door hatchback styles. The Pleo remained in production for 13 years, from 1998 to 2010, and was competitively priced within its category.

Exterior

The Pleo’s design followed a clean and simple aesthetic typical of late '90s kei cars. It featured angular headlights, a trapezoidal grille, and dual air intakes on the front. The rear included squared taillights and a neat bumper. Both body variants shared identical styling, with the 5-door version slightly longer to accommodate the rear doors.

Interior

Inside, the Pleo used basic gray plastic trim with fabric-covered seats. Standard features included power steering, front power windows, central locking, a tachometer, trip meter, and an audio system. Higher trims added rear power windows, body-colored mirrors and handles, and power mirrors. Optional extras included a sunroof, navigation system, and automatic climate control. While compact, the interior offered modest comfort.

Engine & Transmission

The Pleo came with two 0.66L Inline-4 engine options:

Naturally aspirated DOHC 12-valve (52 bhp @ 6400 RPM)

Supercharged DOHC 12-valve (62 bhp @ 7000 RPM)

Transmission choices included a 5-speed manual or 4-speed CVT automatic.

Fuel Efficiency

The Pleo delivered up to 15 KM/L, giving it a range of around 525 KM with its 35-liter fuel tank.

Competitors

Key rivals included the Suzuki Alto, Suzuki Wagon R, Nissan Moco, Honda N One, Mitsubishi Ek, Daihatsu Mira, and others in the kei car segment.
