Punjab to Launch 2,000 Charging Stations for Electric Buses
The Punjab government is set to strengthen EV infrastructure in Punjab by launching a massive initiative to install 2,000 EV stations dedicated to electric vehicle charging for e-buses across the province. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, this ambitious project aims to promote green transport in Punjab by transforming public mobility systems. The initial rollout includes 600 electric buses following the successful implementation of the pilot public transport EV service in Lahore.
This progressive move was discussed in a high-level video conference chaired by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman at the Civil Secretariat. Key officials including transport and health department secretaries, the CEO of Lahore Waste Management Company, and several district commissioners took part. The Punjab EV launch marks a significant step toward clean mobility, comfort, and modern transit.
During the meeting, district-level officers were instructed to identify optimal locations for bus depots and EV charging stations. Emphasizing the vision of the chief minister, Zaman said that Punjab’s goal is to provide citizens with world-class, safe, and environmentally sustainable travel options. He also directed authorities to take swift action against overloaded vehicles to enhance road safety and commuter experience.
Success of Electric Bus Service in Lahore
The public transport EV journey began in February 2025 with the launch of electric buses in Lahore. Starting with just 27 buses, the project quickly gained public approval, prompting the addition of 500 more buses by August 2025. Each bus offers modern amenities like free Wi-Fi and phone charging ports, with a flat fare of Rs. 20. Building on this success, the government is now expanding electric bus services across major cities in Punjab.
Focus on Environment and Air Quality
The government’s push for green transport in Punjab is part of a broader environmental strategy. In May 2025, the province introduced a Vehicle Emission Testing program to combat rising pollution. These efforts, combined with the development of a widespread EV infrastructure in Punjab, are aimed at tackling smog and improving air quality, especially during peak pollution months like October and November.
This initiative underscores Punjab’s long-term commitment to sustainable mobility, cleaner air, and a healthier future for its residents.
