Nissan and Mitsubishi to Manufacture Cheap Electric Cars

Globally renowned automakers Nissan and Mitsubishi have collaborated to manufacture cheap electric cars. Recently, both companies held an event to finalize the agreement for the development of electric vehicles EVs. Remember, both companies will develop electric cars for Japanese market.

The ceremony was held at Mitsubishi’s Mizushima plant in Kurashiki City in Okayama prefecture. Both companies will produce mini-EVs at the said plant.

The partnership will utilize Mitsubishi's expertise in manufacturing Kei cars and the EV development skills of both carmakers. The companies plan to launch Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X (Cross) EVs in Japan next month.

The Mizushima plant already has battery pack integration and EV platform production lines. The i-MiEV and Minicab MiEV are also manufactured in it.

According to Nissan both EVs will be offered with “sufficient range for everyday use” and a cheap price. They offer “a smooth and powerful driving experience as well as high levels of safety and comfort through the adoption of advanced driver assistance systems and connectivity” it added.

The Japanese Auto market is already dominated by Kei cars. Last year the sale of Kei cars in Japan reached 1.65 million , which amounts to 37% of total vehicle sales. The Japanese market is yet to embrace EVs, which will likely be helped by the overall popularity of Kei cars in the country.
