Clear Coat Peeling o r Flaking

Clear Coat Peeling o r Flaking

A common issue in older Santros is clear coat peeling, especially on the hood, trunk, and top edges of doors. The paint starts cracking and peeling in small flakes, revealing the dull base coat underneath. This usually worsens after continuous exposure to sunlight o r after substandard repainting jobs. What causes this clear coat failure, and what is the recommended method to repair it?

Possible Causes:

Aging factory clear coat

Previous low-quality repaint jobs

Extended sun exposure causing clear coat breakdown

Use of abrasive rubbing compounds without protection afterward

Solutions:

Clear coat cannot be repaired by polishing once it starts peeling.

The proper solution is:

Sand down affected area

Reapply base coat if necessary

Apply new high-quality clear coat

For large peeling areas: a full panel repaint is recommended.

To prevent future peeling:

Avoid low-quality paint shops

Ensure UV-resistant clear coat is applied

Maintain the paint with sealants/wax
