Transmission Oil Leakage and Low Gearbox Oil Level

Transmission Oil Leakage and Low Gearbox Oil Level

Owners sometimes observe oil s under the car, especially near the gearbox area. Low transmission oil leads to noise during shifting, jerky gear engagement, and potential long-term damage to the transmission. In some cases, the leakage originates from worn-out seals o r loose bolts on the gearbox housing. What steps should be taken to identify the leak source, and how can this problem be resolved?

Possible Causes:

Worn axle seals common in older Santro models

Loose drain/fill plug

Cracked gearbox housing

Leaking gasket o r seal on the gear selector assembly

Old sealant on gearbox halves

Solutions:

Lift the car and inspect the gearbox area to locate the leak.

Replace any damaged axle seals — they are inexpensive and commonly fail.

Tighten o r replace drain and fill plugs if leaking.

If the leak is from the selector seal, replace the selector shaft seal.

After repairs, refill gearbox oil to the correct level usually 75W-90.

For severe cracks, the gearbox may need aluminum welding o r full replacement.
