How do worn brake pads affect Mini Cooper performance in Pakistan?

My Mini Cooper recently started making squealing noises when braking, and stopping distances seem slightly longer. Could this be due to worn brake pads? What are the risks of continuing to drive with worn pads in Pakistani city and highway conditions?
