Why Is My BMW 2 Series Showing Reduced Engine Power — Could a Clogged Air Filter Be the Reason?

I’m driving a BMW 2 Series in Pakistan, and lately the car feels sluggish, especially when overtaking o r going uphill. The “Drivetrain Malfunction” warning has appeared twice. A friend suggested the dusty environment here might clog the air filter faster than usual. Can a clogged air filter really cause power loss on the 2 Series, and how often should it be replaced in Pakistani conditions?
