BYD Recalls 115,000 EVs Amid Battery & Design Issues
In a major development for the electric vehicle industry, BYD, one of China’s largest EV manufacturers, has initiated its biggest-ever recall, affecting more than 115,000 vehicles. This BYD car recall includes the Tang Series SUVs and Yuan Pro electric vehicles, both produced between 2015 and 2022. The recall was prompted by several BYD battery issues and BYD design faults uncovered during inspections by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
Details of the Affected Models
The recall covers two popular BYD models with distinct BYD vehicle defects. Around 44,535 units of the Tang Series SUVs, manufactured between March 2015 and July 2017, face a design problem in their drive motor controller. This defect could lead to overheating and potentially result in a sudden loss of power — a serious BYD safety concern for drivers.
In addition, 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles, produced between February 2021 and August 2022, are being recalled due to battery installation errors. According to reports, flaws in the battery sealing process could let moisture enter, especially during humid or rainy conditions, increasing the risk of BYD EV problems and compromising vehicle safety.
History of BYD Recalls
This latest BYD recall news adds to a series of recent safety actions by the automaker. Earlier in January 2025, BYD withdrew 6,843 Fengcheng Bao 5 plug-in hybrids from the market over potential fire hazards. Likewise, in September 2024, the company recalled nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus models due to steering control unit faults—another case highlighting BYD manufacturing issues.
Impact on the EV Industry
The BYD recall 2025 serves as a reminder of the increasing safety scrutiny within China’s growing electric vehicle market. While the recall poses short-term challenges, industry experts note that such actions reflect BYD’s commitment to transparency and safety. Despite these electric car recall events, BYD continues to lead in global EV sales, emphasizing its focus on innovation, reliability, and customer safety.
