GWM Tank 500 HEV Approved and Ready for Launch in Australia
The federal government of Australia has granted formal approval for the sale of the GWM Tank 500 SUV, with its much-anticipated launch slated for the initial quarter of 2024. Positioned as a direct adversary to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, the Tank 500 boasts dimensions of 5,078mm in length, 1,934mm in width, and 1,905mm in height, featuring a 2,850mm wheelbase—making it marginally more substantial than its Toyota counterpart.
Remarkable Power and Performance
The Tank 500 is driven by a robust 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol hybrid system, delivering an impressive combined output of 346hp and 615Nm of torque. This power is effectively transmitted to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Additionally, the overseas market provides alternative engine options, including a 3.0L mild-hybrid V6 petrol engine producing 348hp/500Nm and a potent 2.0L hybrid setup with 402hp/750Nm. GWM Australia intends to provide all three powertrains, striving to optimize its success in the fiercely competitive SUV segment.
Towing Capacity and Wheel Choices
Homologation data reveals that the Tank 500 matches the Toyota Prado with a braked towing capacity of 3,000kg and an unbraked towing capacity of 750kg. Standard features encompass 18-inch alloy wheels, with optional 19- and 20-inch wheels available.
Opulent Interior Features
Within the Tank 500, drivers can indulge in a sophisticated 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The opulent multi-tone interior showcases Nappa leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and front seats that are both heated and ventilated, offering 8 distinct massage modes.
GWM's Pledge to Compete
Since its public unveiling in 2021 and subsequent market introduction in 2022, GWM has remained steadfast in its commitment to establishing the Tank 500 as a robust alternative to the Toyota LC Prado. The SUV is already acknowledged as a direct Prado contender in markets where it is available, earning accolades for its distinctive features and commendable performance. Notably, BAIC’s BJ60 SUV is also emerging as a notable player in the same league, raising pertinent questions about Toyota Cars 2023's standing in the mid-sized ladder-frame SUV segment. Only time will unveil the true impact these Chinese rivals are poised to have on Toyota's market dominance.
