Honda Plans to Build New SUV and Pickup

Honda's recent patents indicate potential plans for a new rugged vehicle, reminiscent of the iconic Honda Element and a compact pickup truck with innovative features. The first patent reveals a squared-off SUV design, drawing inspiration from the Honda Element, which was known for its distinctive boxy shape and robust plastic bodywork during its production run from 2003 to 2011. Despite its discontinuation, the Element garnered a dedicated fan base due to its unique design ahead of its time.

The emergence of electric powertrains presents a promising opportunity for Honda to resurrect the Element. Filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in December 2022 and published on June 27, 2023, these patents hint at Honda's exploration into new vehicle concepts. One patent specifically outlines a camper attachment designed to enhance the vehicle's utility, featuring expandable extensions that augment its size.

Notably, the boxy SUV described in the patent showcases significant ground clearance, coupled with a camper attachment. Its rectangular form and distinct door configuration, including coach doors akin to the Element, underscore its off-road orientation and versatility.

The second patent focuses on a compact pickup truck equipped with an adjustable cargo partition. This feature allows users to modify the bed length by adjusting the partition into two positions, while a retractable roof expands interior space when the partition is fully retracted. Although this truck does not directly reference the Element, its rugged appearance and unique design elements, such as the A-pillar structure, suggest a robust competitor to models like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Despite the intriguing concepts presented in these patents, the road to production remains uncertain. Automakers frequently file patents for innovative concepts that may never materialize in the market. Nevertheless, these patents indicate that Honda is exploring possibilities for a new Element or similar vehicle, potentially catering to enthusiasts of boxy, off-road vehicles.
