BYD Atto 3 vs. Deepal S07: The New EV Rivals in Pakistan

Another quarter, another brand launch in Pakistan. The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) revolution has finally arrived. BYD and Deepal, two of the oldest and largest electric car manufacturers worldwide, are set to introduce their operations in mid-August 2024. Deepal will launch on August 16, while BYD will follow on August 17.

Models to Expect
BYD is bringing three models to Pakistan: the Atto 3, Dolphin, and a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), the Sealion 6. On the other hand, Deepal will introduce two EV models: the L07 and S07. According to our research, the S07 and Atto 3 are the top contenders in their segment, both in terms of size and price, despite their shared Chinese origin.

BYD Atto 3: First Impressions
The BYD Atto 3, a Chinese-origin EV crossover, is designed to compete with cars like the Hyundai IONIQ 6, ORA 03 (owned by Haval in Pakistan), and MG ZS EV. Although many in Pakistan may be unfamiliar with BYD, the company is well-known for its various electronic components, including smartphone batteries, electric buses, and semiconductor chips.

The Atto 3 gives off European vibes with high-grade materials, impressive paint quality, and an unconventional interior inspired by ocean waves. The car features clicky buttons and well-finished PU leather. Its ergonomic design promises a comfortable drive, although long-distance travel is limited in Pakistan due to current EV infrastructure.

Deepal S07: First Impressions
The Deepal S07 is a strong competitor to the BYD Atto 3. Owned by Changan Motors, Deepal has been manufacturing cars since 1959 and is one of China’s oldest auto manufacturers. The S07 is a mid-size C-segment crossover with a sleek, simple design reminiscent of Tesla's style, contrasting with the Atto 3's more flamboyant look.

The Deepal S07 offers smooth drivability comparable to Japanese or Korean brands, packed with high-tech features and comfort. Its cabin is spacious, similar to D-segment cars like the Sonata and BMW 7 Series, with ergonomic seats and luxurious touches. The door panels feature wooden handles, and the dashboard is made of black PU leather with body-colored stitching. Controls are mainly via the display, similar to Tesla’s interface.

What We Know About the Launches
BYD will launch two EV models, Dolphin and Atto 3, along with a PHEV model, the Sealion 6. While prices for the EV models are yet to be announced, the Sealion 6 is expected to start around 1.1-1.4 crore PKR. BYD's official launch is set for August 17, 2024.

Deepal will introduce two EV models: the L07 and S07. The L07, a D-segment premium sedan, will compete with the Tesla Model 3 but at about 50% less cost. The S07 is a crossover similar in size to the MG HS and Kia Sportage. Deepal’s launch is scheduled for August 16, 2024, just a day before BYD. One of these models is expected to be priced around 1.7 crore PKR.
