Is the Mazda EZ-60 Better Than the Tesla Model Y?

Mazda has revealed exciting details about the upcoming Mazda EZ-60 SUV, set for its official Mazda EZ-60 launch in China this August. This highly anticipated Mazda electric SUV offers two distinct powertrain options, catering to both fully electric and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) enthusiasts. Drawing inspiration from the Arata Concept, the Mazda EZ-60 EV sports a unique and modern design, featuring a sleek grille seamlessly integrated into the body and signature split LED headlights with a full-width daytime running light strip that makes the front instantly recognizable.

The rear of the Mazda EZ-60 is equally striking, showcasing a continuous LED taillight spanning the width of the vehicle with the bold "MAZDA" emblem prominently displayed. Both the fully electric and range-extender versions maintain a near-identical exterior look, with the electric variant distinguished by a subtle "EV" badge. In terms of size, the Mazda EZ-60 specs reveal dimensions of 4,850 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, complemented by a 2,902 mm wheelbase. These measurements put it in the same competitive league as the Tesla Model Y, offering ample interior space for five passengers and available with either 19-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels.

Step inside, and the Mazda EZ-60 interior impresses with its minimalist and futuristic layout. Dominating the dashboard is a massive 26.45-inch 5K floating touchscreen that serves as the command hub for infotainment and vehicle settings, significantly reducing physical controls. The cabin also features a dual-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel and a column-mounted drive shifter, creating a clean and spacious console. Luxury elements abound with front "zero-gravity" seats that include ventilation, heating, massage options, and even integrated headrest speakers. Additional conveniences include wireless charging and clever storage compartments, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Under the hood, the all-electric Mazda EZ-60 EV is powered by a single 190 kW electric motor delivering around 255 horsepower. The motor draws energy from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provided by CALB, promising competitive driving range and performance, though exact figures are yet to be disclosed. For those concerned about range, Mazda’s EREV version combines the electric motor with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that acts as a generator, extending driving range beyond the battery’s 31.73 kWh capacity. This setup allows for roughly 160 km of pure electric driving before the engine assists to recharge the battery, addressing range anxiety without sacrificing efficiency.

While the Mazda EZ-60 price has not been officially announced, estimates place it between RMB 150,000 and RMB 300,000 (approximately €18,760 to €37,530). Mazda has already generated considerable buzz with 20,000 pre-orders in China, fueled by an innovative reservation system requiring only a refundable RMB 10 yuan (€1.26) deposit. This deposit grows daily until the buyer takes delivery, and the accumulated amount is deducted from the final purchase price, making the Mazda EZ-60 SUV a compelling and accessible option in the expanding electric vehicle market.
