Islamabad to Launch Electric Tram Service on Four Routes

Islamabad to Launch Electric Tram Service on Four Routes
In a significant move towards sustainable urban transportation, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) is set to introduce the Islamabad tram service, offering a modern and eco-conscious commuting option for residents of the capital.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa shared this development following a meeting with representatives from the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) held on Thursday. He confirmed that a feasibility study will be conducted as part of the initial phase, following instructions from both the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister.
“We’re taking it step by step. With electric buses already operating in the city, the next goal is to launch electric tram Islamabad,” Randhawa stated in an interview with a national publication. “The decision to proceed with a feasibility study has been finalized today.”
According to a CDA press release, the meeting emphasized the implementation of Soft Wheel Electric Trams and the enhancement of the city’s electric feeder bus service. The CDA chairman directed relevant departments to expedite the study to ensure the timely introduction of the new tram service along the city’s busiest corridors.
Sources close to the authority mentioned that a Chinese consultancy is expected to be contracted to conduct the study. Initially, four major tram routes Islamabad are under consideration, including a line connecting Rawat to Faisal Mosque via the Expressway, and another linking Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport through Srinagar Highway.
While similar initiatives like the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system—planned with China Railway—have been discussed in the past, they failed to materialize. However, this time around, officials appear resolute in pushing forward the Pakistan tram project as a priority for urban mobility.
With this new approach, the Islamabad electric transit system is poised to transform the capital’s infrastructure. The Islamabad city tram initiative reflects a broader commitment to reducing pollution and enhancing connectivity across key city zones.
