Mercedes-AMG First Electric SUV Is Coming Soon

Mercedes-AMG is set to launch its first standalone electric SUV, marking a significant milestone for the high-performance brand. Known as "Born in Affalterbach," this model will be the second electric vehicle based on AMG's exclusive EV platform, AMG.EA. While details remain scarce, the model promises an electrifying blend of AMG’s signature performance and the sustainability of electric power. A shadowy teaser image shows off a generously sized SUV with a sleek, coupe-like roofline, hinting at its sporty appeal and modern design.

A New Rival for Electric Performance SUVs
This new AMG SUV is positioned to take on strong competitors in the electric performance SUV market. Among its main rivals are models like the Lotus Eletre and the soon-to-launch electric Porsche Cayenne. It will arrive after the release of AMG's electric four-door GT, a direct challenger to the Porsche Taycan. By entering this competitive space, Mercedes-AMG seeks to combine its legacy of high-performance engineering with cutting-edge electric technology, broadening its appeal in the luxury EV market.

AMG’s Legacy of Powerful SUVs
Mercedes AMG’s journey with high-performance SUVs began in 1998 with the launch of the Mercedes ML55 AMG. Over the years, AMG has expanded its SUV lineup to include seven distinct models, ranging from the compact GLA to the iconic G63 4x4. With the upcoming electric SUV, AMG continues to build on its expertise, aiming to deliver an electrified model that still embodies the power and handling AMG enthusiasts expect.

High-Performance Motors and Rapid Charging
The "Born in Affalterbach" SUV is designed to deliver exceptional performance, a hallmark of AMG vehicles. AMG Chairman Michael Schiebe emphasized the importance of both sustained performance and fast charging for this electric model. The SUV will feature advanced axial flux electric motors from Yasa, providing 30% more torque, 5% higher efficiency, and double the performance of traditional motors. This technological edge is intended to keep the electric SUV in line with AMG’s “AMG First, EV Second” philosophy, focusing on driving thrill with an electric twist.

Future Production and Market Debut
The AMG electric SUV is expected to begin winter testing with its first development prototypes, although the production model likely won’t be available until 2026. Schiebe highlighted the model’s significance, stating that it will meet the rising demand for high-performance SUVs while staying true to AMG’s brand. With an eye on performance, technology, and practicality, the "Born in Affalterbach" SUV is set to make a memorable entry into the luxury electric vehicle segment, promising a thrilling new option for SUV and performance enthusiasts alike.
