Crackdown Begins on Smoke-Emitting Vehicles - Details inside

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has instructed the Punjab government to launch a strict action against smoke-emitting vehicles to combat rising smog and deteriorating air quality across the province. This decision comes amid increasing public concern over vehicular pollution in major cities.

During the hearing on petitions addressing environmental hazards, Justice Shahid Karim pointed out that smoke-belching vehicles have become a frequent sight on roads, significantly contributing to Lahore’s worsening air pollution levels. The judge emphasized the need for urgent measures under vehicle emission control Pakistan laws.

Authorities were directed to carry out a two to three-week crackdown on smoky cars, ensuring full compliance with government vehicle pollution rules. Special attention was given to long-distance vehicles traveling from Lahore to Karachi, which were identified as key contributors to air pollution in the region.

Representatives from the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Parks and Horticultural Authority (PHA), and other relevant departments appeared before the court. Justice Karim expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of a director-level EPA official, despite previous court orders.

The court further instructed the EPA to implement anti-pollution vehicle measures, including displaying warning banners throughout Lahore to notify citizens that smoke-emitting vehicles action would be strictly enforced, and offenders could be impounded. Following the hearing, EPA officials confirmed that banners had already been installed in multiple locations. Additionally, the judge ordered officers to be deployed with the police at inter-city bus terminals and toll plazas to ensure roads air quality enforcement and uphold smoky car penalties for violators.

This move is expected to strengthen traffic pollution strict action in the city and send a clear message that air pollution vehicles crackdown will be strictly monitored under existing regulations.
