GiGi EV Unveiled: A Closer Look

GiGi EV Unveiled: A Closer Look
The spotlight at the 2023 Pakistan Auto Show (PAPS) gravitated towards the petite electric marvel, the GiGi EV, presented by the new entrant in the market, GuGo Motors.
Priced at PKR 46.5 lac, the GiGi EV is exclusively available through pre-orders, featuring an estimated 30-day delivery timeline. Presently, it is offered as Completely Built-Up (CBU), but the company expresses its intent to assemble the vehicle locally in the future.
Under its hood, the electric mini boasts a 30 kW (40hp) / 100 Nm Permanent Magnetic Synchronous electric motor propelling the rear wheels. The 16.8 kWh (112VDC) Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery requires up to 5 hours for a full charge using a standard 220V power supply.

Impressive features encompass a multi-function steering wheel, climate control, electronic shift modes (Economy and Sport), and an 8.8-inch infotainment system. Safety provisions include a driver's side airbag, power cut-off protection during collisions, seatbelt warnings, ABS with EBD, ESP, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), ASR/TCS/TEC, ARB, auto-hold brake, Event Data Recorder (EDR), reversing camera, tire pressure monitor, parking sensors, and an anti-theft mechanism with remote control.
Originating from China, the GiGi EV is revealed to be a rebadged DFSK Mini EV, distinguishing itself from the Rinco Aria, a previously introduced Chinese-made mini EV. The DFSK Mini EV, available in three trims, aligns with the most equipped version introduced in Pakistan.
Further details from the official website unveil a 200 km driving range, a 5.1-second acceleration time (0-50 km/h), and a charging time of a maximum of 7.5 hours, contrasting with the 5-hour claim by GuGo Motors. With a genuine 4-seater layout and 2 doors, the GiGi EV provides a substantial 843 liters of luggage volume with folded-down rear seats.

Notably, Regal Automobiles recently unveiled the Seres 3 EV SUV, related to the same parent company, DFSK. Additionally, discussions of introducing a more affordable 4-door version of the DFSK Mini EV in Pakistan by Regal Auto were shared, albeit without a specified launch timeline.
Despite its promising features, the GiGi EV faces skepticism from the public due to concerns over high electricity bills, erratic power supply, and inadequate EV infrastructure. While the introduction of electric cars in Pakistan is commendable for addressing fuel costs and environmental concerns, the GiGi's price tag, nearly 75% higher than the Suzuki Alto VXR, raises affordability challenges. The government's commitment to facilitating accessibility to small, fuel-efficient cars, including EVs, will play a pivotal role in determining the success of these pricier EVs in the local market.
